If you look on the map you will notice that China is not a small place. China is BIG! How do the Chinese get around then, what kind of transportation do they use? In fact they get around like in Europe: in cars, buses, motorcycles, bikes… no surprise, right? However, the Chinese do not have the same system of lanes. In China they decided that three cars could fit in a lane that is usually occupied by two cars - so I think you can picture the chaos.

To add to this disorder, there is construction everywhere and most people don’t cross at the cross walks so there are all the J-walkers who try to weave through the oncoming traffic. With all of this going, on it is no surprise that everyone is honking at each other for one reason or another, like a bus who stops in the middle of the road to unload his passengers.

The memory I will not forget is my experience in a “tuk-tuk” (vehicles that are a mix between a motorcycle and a car that are used as taxis). First of all, a tuk-tuk has no doors or seatbelts, so with the bumpy roads of China, it feels like you are on a rollercoaster, but you forgot to but on the safety straps. Secondly, you are the smallest fish in the sea… so this adds to your feeling of insecurity.

Finally, when I was in one, the driver tried to weave his way through the little free space between two buses, which left me wide-eyed, gripping on to my seat for dear life!

The picture I just painted of China's means of transportation might be a little exaggerated, but the truth is that it is definitely not 100% organized.
